President & CEO – Ferry System
Position Overview:

Our client is a newly formed entity that will be grown to approximately 30 full time employees. The President will be charged with managing the NYC Ferry System, which, in its inaugural year, made 3.7M trips, and currently has a fleet of 20 small passenger “fast ferry” vessels. The President will report directly to the NYCF Board of Directors which includes the Deputy Mayor of Economic Development, President of EDC and other positions to be appointed by the Mayor. The President will have the following direct reports: Chief Operations Officer / General Manager, General Counsel, External Affairs Director, Chief Financial Officer and the Office Manager.
  • Lead all of the day-to-day operations via a service contract to manage the Operating Agreement with the procured operator of the NYC Ferry system.
  • Manage the expansion of the newly formed NYC Ferry Corporation to approximately 30 maritime professionals, which oversee the long term planning and construction of the system. This team runs an operations watch floor, dock master services, customer experience, financial management, fleet management, infrastructure construction and maintenance, contract management, sponsorship, government affairs and data analysis and planning.
  • Ensure that the system successfully meets its goals of providing safe, equitable, affordable and sustainable access to New Yorkers, and contributing to the Mayor’s goal of making New York City the fairest big city in the world.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in marine transportation, marine engineering or equivalent.
  • 15+ years’ experience in roles operating vessels, ferry systems, harbors / ports or other equivalent marine transportations systems.
  • Extensive experience with regulatory and safety requirements involved with the operations of running fleets of passenger vessels, including emergency responders protocols.
  • 10+ years’ executive level management experience in transportation financing, planning and operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including written documents, briefings to Board of Directors and City leadership, public speaking, and briefings to the media / press. Also required, is experience/proficiency with communicating clearly to regulators, operators and the press, occasionally during emergency or time-constrained conditions.
  • Proven ability to manage large, diverse staff, operators and consultants with a wide range of skills and functions.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Multi-faceted experience working on public-private contracts in high-profile environments.
  • Working knowledge of New York Harbor’s maritime environment
